People working in the private security industry sometimes find themselves in a position where they need to use physical intervention skills.
Learners will be taught about the different types and definitions of physical intervention as well as the legal implications of its use and why it is important to use only as a last resort. They will learn about how to reduce the risks when physical intervention is used, including dynamic risk assessment, risk factors and responsibilities following a physical intervention. They will also learn about good practice to follow after a physical intervention.
Learners will develop practical skills to protect against assault, including stance and positioning, disengagement and how to separate people who are fighting. They will also learn how to hold and escort, using restrictive and non-restrictive methods.
Learning Outcomes
- Understand Physical Interventions and the legal/professional implications of their use.
- Understand how to reduce the risk of harm when physical intervention skills are used.
- Be able to use non-aggressive physical skills to protect yourself and others from assault
- Be able to use non-pain related standing holding and escorting techniques, including non-restrictive skills
- Understand good practice to follow after physical intervention

Do You Hold A Valid SIA Door Supervisors or Security Guarding Licence? Are You Sufficiently Trained as a Door Supervisor or Security Guard? Do You Hold A Valid Physical Intervention Qualification? Have you had your Physical Intervention Refresher?
If you have answered yes to all of these questions then don't read any further.
If you have answered no to anyone these questions then read on.
If you have been trained in Door Supervision or Security Guarding in the last 3 years and you have obtained your SIA licence then well done for doing so.
You would also know that back in August 2010 the governing body the SIA (Security Industry Authority) brought out another condition in order for you to work as a security officer. The new condition is that all security officers will have to have trained and gained a Physical Intervention qualification to work.
If you were already a SIA licence holder before the new qualification came out back in August 2010 then you would obviously know that you do not hold the Physical Intervention qualification. By you not having the Physical Intervention qualification this could hold back your career as a security officer.
The thing is you could still work as a security officer because you have a valid licence to do so. But if a career opportunity was to arise you wouldn't necessarily be in the running for it because you wouldn't have the newer and better qualification.
Eventually when your licence expires and it has to be renewed you will have to do another full course.
Also if you are working in an environment where you are at risk to any sort of work related violence for instance working for the NHS or local authorities then this could be for you also.
